How to apply
Regardless of whether you want to study in Austria as an undergraduate or graduate student, you will be required to submit your application to the university or college of your choice by using the registration steps outlined below:
*Also endeavor to contact your university’s Admissions Officer for more application instructions. In several cases, the application form is easily accessible on the Internet, but it may happen you will need to ask to have it sent by post to your home address.
*You will also be required to submit some supporting documents to prove you fulfill all of the entrance requirements for the courses or study program of your choice.
*Fill in your application form and return it to your university along with attested or certified copies of the supporting documentation.
*You will be notified whether you have finally been admitted. Upon admission, your university will issue a student pass no matter you are an undergraduate or graduate student. The student pass is used to prove you have become a member of the university you applied for.
Application deadlines in Austria
There are two general admission periods for studies at university in Austria with the deadlines as explained below:
- September 1: submit your application before September 1 for studies in the winter semester.
- February 1: for studies in the summer semester.
Extended application period for EU students
After the general admission period expires, the extended admission period starts. Through the extended admission period, students from the European Union can also apply for university studies in Austria according to the extended deadlines listed below:
- November 30: for studies in the winter semester.
- April 30: for studies in the summer semester.
Please, note that the tuition fees are increased by 10% over the ordinary rate if you submit your application during the extended period.
· Undergraduate studies
If you have completed your secondary studies in a recognized high school in your country and are in possession of a legalized secondary school leaving certificate and qualify for higher education studies in your home country, you may as well qualify for university education in Austria. However, you are requested to prove your level of English and/or German. In some cases, you are also required to take additional qualifying courses.
· Master’s studies
If you are applying for a master’s program at university in Austria, you are required to be in possession of a recognized bachelor’s or equivalent degree diploma.
· Doctoral studies
In the event you are applying for doctoral studies at university in Austria, you are required to be in possession of a relevant diploma or master’s degree diploma.
Language requirements for studies at universities in Austria
You may not have known that the language of instruction at Austrian universities is German, as such you will be required to prove your level of command of the German language. You may do so by presenting the results you received at school examinations if you studied German as part of your study program or by presenting German language courses diplomas, such as the Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische Studienbewerber– TestDaF. However, the restriction to study in German language applies predominantly to undergraduate programs. But Postgraduate programs don’t require you to study in German English. As a postgraduate student, you are at liberty to study in English,
If the language of instruction of your course is English, you will required to prove your level of command of English. Please, note that in general, schools require a minimum level of command of a language corresponding to the B1/B2 level according to the European language passport in order for you to successfully pass your courses.
- The filled-in application form.
- A valid passport. Make sure your passport is valid throughout the entire period of your stay in Austria.
- A copy of your health insurance plan.
- Two recent passport size photo.
- Proof of accommodation in Austria.
- A criminal record certificate.
- A proof of sufficient financial means or copy of your grant/scholarship stating you can support yourself financially throughout your time as a student in Austria.
Please, check with your local authority in Austria or Austrian embassy in your country if you need to provide additional documentation.
If your documents were not originally issued in German, you are required to have them translated by an authorized translator.
The cost of the application is in total EUR 120 and the usual processing time is up to 3 months.
In order for your student residence permit in Austria to be granted, you will need to prove you have, at least, EUR 872.31 per month if you are 24 years old or above, or EUR 481.75 per month if you are up to 24 years old.
